In reply to your Letter of the 7th Feb, which was yesterday delivered by your brother, I have great pleasure in feeling myself authorized to bear my testimony to the valuable service rendered by your family & yourself during a long period of much difficulty (while I served for several years on the Jonian Island), having had considerable opportunity of becoming acquainted with them. I am aware of the heavy losses sustained by your family at the time of the French Invasion of Italy on account of his fidelity to England. I am so well acquainted with your zealous and meritorious conduct during the war against Murat King of Naples, in which, from your information and exertions, the flotilla and treasures that were about to be embarked were captured by one of your sons, saving British property in Corfu and elsewhere.
I consider you possess strong claims on this Country, and it will afford me sincere pleasure to learn that the memorial you propose to submit to Her Majesty's Government is attended with success.

I very well remember the services you rendered to Hong Kong & Government during the years 1864 & 65, and my applications on your behalf were forwarded several times to the Government. I am sorry they were not more successful. I am not aware that you have any further claims to refer to them.
